Trying to get flat abs for summer? Channel your inner stoner. Turns out your diet pills, gym membership and juice cleanse are the least fun way to get skinny. Smoking some weed (or vaping it, which it the healthiest way to receive the health benefits of marijuana without the toxins from burning a joint or pipe) may actually prevent the pounds from creeping up on you.
A new study published in the American Journal of Medicine found weed smokers have smaller waistlines. Since most stoners we know get the munchies after smoking up and pig out on snacks, we assumed stoners would be fatter than the average Joe. Turns out something in marijuana actually lowers levels of insulin, the hormone that regulates metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. This means less of the carbs stoners eat are stored as fat. Stoners are also less likely to develop diabetes, which is caused by loss of insulin control.
Did you smoke weed in the past and then quit? Turns out you’re in luck! The effects of marijuana use on insulin control are long-lasting, as former users in the study also had smaller waistlines than people who never smoke marijuana at all.
Current weed smokers still had the skinniest waists. We think it might have something to do with their relaxed attitude too, since stress hormones are known to pack on belly fat. Also awesome to note: red wine drinkers have skinnier waists too! Drink or smoke up!

Could watching a funny movie every night help you lose weight? It could if you’re super stressed out! Turns out chronic stress, via causes like not getting enough sleep, your boss annoying you, road rage, an awful roomate or a bad breakup, can cause release of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol causes weight gain and packs on extra fat to your tummy area as part of that nasty “fight or flight” response.
Just laughing 15 minutes a day can burn up to 40 calories a day according to a study by the International Journal of Obesity. Laughing works both your abdominal and facial muscles. That doesn’t sound like much, but that’s the same amount of calories you burn while walking a half a mile. Bonus besides burning calories: laughing decreases stress, which will also prevent the belly fat returning!
Another way to battles stress is via an safe, stimulant-free Indian herbal supplement that lowers your cortisol levels. I take Ashwagandha every day to lower my stress and anxiety levels, and it’s definitely helped my tummy get flatter. It usually retails at under $10 for 100 pill supply at Amazon. Buy it: HERE.
Want a quick way to decrease your appetite without taking any pills? Play tricks with color! The color blue is a clinically proven appetite suppressor. This is most likely because with the exception of blueberries, most natural foods aren’t blue and our brains associate blue with poison.
Eat off of a blue plate to maximize weight loss. Another color of plate that works to decrease appetite is black since few black foods exist in nature besides black olives. Black food is often moldy or burnt, so our brains react to black as poison. Purple also suppresses the appetite since few natural foods are purple besides grapes.
Plate colors to avoid because they stimulate the appetite include red, yellow, orange and green.
In a companion online article, TODAY diet and nutrition editor Madelyn Fernstrom describes Dr. Michele’s book as one of the top books for emotional eaters.
“CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD (EMOTIONAL EATING) Many people are walking encyclopedias of calories and what to eat. The debate between an apple and apple pie doesn’t relate to lack of knowledge, but of a problematic relationship with food. These books help in different ways…….these really work with ANY diet plan you choose. It is the missing link for many books – not saying “what to do” (the basis of many plans), but “how to do it” (breaking down barriers to why you can’t follow a plan).
Train Your Brain to Get Thin (Melinda Boyd, MS, RD and Michele Noonan, PhD) -good combo of brain biology and behavior
-fab strategies of recognizing the problems, and how to re-train your behavior for successful weight loss”
