Trying to get flat abs for summer? Channel your inner stoner. Turns out your diet pills, gym membership and juice cleanse are the least fun way to get skinny. Smoking some weed (or vaping it, which it the healthiest way to receive the health benefits of marijuana without the toxins from burning a joint or pipe) may actually prevent the pounds from creeping up on you.
A new study published in the American Journal of Medicine found weed smokers have smaller waistlines. Since most stoners we know get the munchies after smoking up and pig out on snacks, we assumed stoners would be fatter than the average Joe. Turns out something in marijuana actually lowers levels of insulin, the hormone that regulates metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. This means less of the carbs stoners eat are stored as fat. Stoners are also less likely to develop diabetes, which is caused by loss of insulin control.

Did you smoke weed in the past and then quit? Turns out you’re in luck! The effects of marijuana use on insulin control are long-lasting, as former users in the study also had smaller waistlines than people who never smoke marijuana at all.
Current weed smokers still had the skinniest waists. We think it might have something to do with their relaxed attitude too, since stress hormones are known to pack on belly fat. Also awesome to note: red wine drinkers have skinnier waists too! Drink or smoke up!
